New York Fall 2021: Jason Wu

Jason Wu has presented his collection two days ago in New York, with a physical show comprehensive of the public. Of course, all the rules have been respected and the event has taken place in complete safety. For some guests, however, the presence at the show has created mixed feelings, a kind of unease that can only make us reflect on how much we have changed in the last year. After the lockdown we will never be the same again, that’s for sure, and returning to go out “normally”, to meet again as we used to do, will take time.

Consumer’s preferences will change too, and Jason Wu has been particularly careful to present a collection that, according to his forecasts, meets the needs of the future woman. His fall collection is composed of simple and smart looks, an American stylistic feature that favours smart cuts and alluring details. The individual items are very easy to combine, thus creating an adaptable wardrobe. According to Wu, the mix-and-match is passing from being simply convenient into being a real need, and for us, this is valuable not only from a commercial point of view but also from a sustainability one. If our purchasing power is reduced due to the pandemic, it is better to invest in a few items, and being able to combine them easily is a plus.

In the collection there are many midi dresses, floating and only slightly shaped at the waist. Even the skirts are midi and are worn with ton-sur-ton sweaters. The (few) pants, even when paired with the blazer, are relaxed. What makes the collection vivid are the colours’ palette, and especially the prints. Some abstract, others less so, one is made of small Coca Cola’s bottles. They rhyme with the background of the runway, decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables. Cooking has been Jason Wu’s favourite hobby during the quarantine, so why not bring this newfound love for food to the runway? All the products have then been donated to charity, and this is certainly a delicate but important detail.
