PFW: Balenciaga SS20

Whenever the time for Demna Gvasalia is approaching, it is natural to wonder what he will bring to the stage this time. The designer – and the team behind him – was extremely good at creating a real format for his shows, and the hype is skyrocketing every time. For the Spring Summer 2020 the catwalk turned into a political arena, a sort of fashion Parliament, in which the models paraded as state officials emaciated and marked by work. The collection certainly has a political side, but more than anything else it investigates the idea of power dressing and all that it entails.

Thus, the show began with an almost indistinguishable line of men and women wearing anonymous office suits. To then move on to the “electoral campaign”: Gvasalia has looked at the outfits of politicians during public speeches or assemblies and made each garment more modern and cool. How? Obviously with a note of streatwear and a slightly over and boxy silhouette.Only at the end of the collection did some crinoline dresses show off, paying homage to Balenciaga’s beginnings in Spain, as stated by the designer. An imaginative parenthesis, in an otherwise realistic collection, in which the concept of power dress is adapted to be worn every day – and to make anyone wearing it at any time of the day feel full of positive potential.
