“PFW Fall 2020: Comme des Garçons”

The autumn 2020 collection Rei Kawakubo created for Comme des Garçons is part of a broader discussion that has kept the designer occupied for some time. Starting from the question we all asked ourselves at least once: today, in the world in which we live, is it still possible to create something new?
The collection consists of 20 looks that aspire to be timeless and as far as possible detached from everything we have seen and imagined so far. Something new, pure, difficult to define and to pigeonhole (in a historical period, in an artistic movement or in an aesthetic). The only concession Kawakubo makes to herself is to look at the Comme des Garçons archive itself. Self-citations are many and, in some ways, make the work even more exceptional. Comme des Garçons seems to be a world in itself, self-sufficient, which we are invited to look at from the outside, but in which very few things actually have the opportunity to enter.
