Luke and Lucie Meier, creative directors of the Jil Sander brand since 2017, presented the new menswear collection for the upcoming spring/summer season.
The designers’ duo, from the very beginning, worked to relaunch the German brand through elegant and neat collections, which emphasized the craftsmanship of the garments.
For the spring/summer 2022 collection, the concept remains minimal and clean, nevertheless the designers succeed in their intent to transform simplicity into something elegant and desirable.
Exploring the relationships between materials, colors, shapes and volumes, the new collection is a eulogy to individual style and freedom. In fact, after spending a lot of time stuck in the same places and being deprived of any kind of external inspiration and influence, human beings have matured a deep individual awareness, which according to Jil Sander’s designers has then spilled over into style.
The concept of individuality is expressed by Luke and Lucie through basic revisited garments. For example, the addition of over-size pockets on the simplest looks or the contrasting play of zippers on jackets and pants.
Coats are straight and voluminous, and often paired with colorful silk scarves worn around the neck. There is no shortage of animal prints, which help break up the minimalist composure of the looks, and maxi bags among the accessories.
Colors are mixed, from lilac to acid green we then move on to softer shades, such as light pink or off-white. Almost at the end comes a bold red, a color that the designers used to create a total leather suit.
For Luke and Lucie Meier the Jil Sander SS ’22 collection represents a starting point, to put
together pieces that will form a new and free individuality.
