Sardinia by bicycle: itineraries and advice

One of the most suitable regions for a bicycle trip is Sardinia: with its winding roads, its wild and pristine nature and its mountain ranges as a backdrop, the Sardinian land is the ideal place for a holiday of this type. If we then think of the roads with little traffic, then we can understand why cycle tourism is so frequent in Sardinia: being able to pedal peacefully on a free road, admire the view and feel the air on your face, fascinates enthusiasts of all ages.
To enjoy it to the fullest, however, it is good to organize yourself in the most optimal way: Here are some tips for visiting Sardinia by bicycle, and some possible travel itineraries.
Sardinian itineraries to travel by bike
The first step, of course, is to reach Sardinia: you can do it in different ways, but to take your bicycle, and maybe your car, a good solution is definitely the ferry. If this type of trip interests you, see the prices of the ship from Piombino to Olbia and book your place on board: in just over five and a half hours you can start your journey.
The first recommended itinerary starts right from Olbia, and allows you to visit some of the most exclusive places in Sardinia. Almost 95 km of pedaling on fairly linear terrain will cross part of the north-east coast of the island, passing through areas such as Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo, but also the very famous Baia Sardinia. It is a circular route that will then lead back to the starting point, and which in its course will allow you to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Sardinian coast and beaches.
Another itinerary worth doing by bike starts from Santa Teresa Gallura and arrives, with the first 40 km of ups and downs, at the incredible spectacle of Isola Rossa, one of the most paradisiacal areas of Sardinia, perfect for stopping, taking a dip and go snorkelling. From here you can start again and travel another 20 km to reach Castelsardo, a medieval village built on a promontory overlooking the sea: an unmissable stop. This itinerary is quite demanding due to the continuous gradients, but it is definitely worth making this effort to admire these beauties.
Some tips for cycling around Sardinia
If you choose to go on a bicycle trip to discover Sardinia, it might be a good idea to leave by car: Sardinia offers wonderful areas in which to indulge in mountain biking, but difficult to reach except by car.
Furthermore, be careful to choose the optimal period to make this trip in the open air: fortunately the weather in Sardinia is favorable for most of the year, with little rain and temperatures that rarely drop below freezing in winter. However, the rains are all concentrated in the cold period, between October and February, especially in the mountainous areas where cycling is usually done. It’s better to leave in the warm season to avoid the risk of bad weather: between March and October it’s always a good time, but the three summer months are by far the safest choice.
