Now Reading

Around two thousand years ago, on an unspecified date between 17 and 18 A.D., the poet Publius Ovid Naso died.

As he himself had wished, his verses have continued to be read for two millennia and the stories he had woven into his masterpiece, The Metamorphoses, have become deeply imprinted in our collective imagination. The main theme of the great poem is precisely the transformation from one nature to another: his youths, his nymphs, his women in love, his sorrowful mothers are transformed into stones, into rivers, into fountains, into the aerial echo, into animals, into vegetables. Plant metamorphoses are among the most famous, the recurring subject of hundreds of works of art: one need only mention the myth of Apollo and Daphne and that of Narcissus.
