MFW FW21/22: Ferragamo’s sci-fi vision

For the fall/winter 2021 collection, Paul Andrew looks beyond the known horizon, exploring terrain never before crossed by Ferragamo.

Indeed, if for the pre-fall collection the designer focused on a style that combined comfort and modernity, absolute symbols of 2020, for this winter collection, the designer has focused on science fiction. Sci-fi fashion, in particular the aesthetics of the 90s sci-fi films, such as Gattaca, Matrix, were the reference points of Paul Andrew in the research and study phase prior to its realization.

The reason behind this unexpected but highly appreciated leap into the future is the desire for change. The desire to explore as far as the prestigious Florentine maison had never gone. This new direction is also valuable from the market point of view; this inclination in fact responds to the new fashions for the Z generation and in part also for the Millennial, now accustomed to a more fluid and sustainable fashion concepts.

For this edition of the MFW, Ferragamo pushes on the color, the shades of green, navy blue, pink, fluorescent shades, anticipated already in the pre-fall, here take the scene widely. The garments are comfortable, the silhouette is free from unnecessary constraints and far from impracticality, lengthening and becoming thinner.

Andrew seems to focus on comfortable clothes, where the skin always reigns supreme, along with jersey suits and knitted metal; the tunics are not completely oversized but they adapt themselves well to body movements. There are also mohair cardigans, parkas and flair pants.

A trend definitely in vogue at the moment, the frayed effect on coats and dresses, is a constant that we find here too. The sporting motifs stand out from the juxtaposition of clothes, also designed for the evening, combined with running shoes.

A detailed look is certainly due to the shoes; this time, Paul Andrew went really far, proposing a series of shapes never experienced before by Ferragamo. There are space-biker boots, rubber nappa hooves, square toe pump, F-heel and galvanized finish.

“As Salvatore Ferragamo used to say about his shoes, this collection is dedicated to all those who have to walk, united in the determination to reimagine and rebuild a new responsible, positive and joyful future,” explained the designer. If we will have the chance ever to walk in space in unknown worlds, Ferragamo has the perfect outfit ready.
